PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE
Performing Arts Center
Keen Land Design owner, Austin McKeen, worked on this project while employed at Davis Partnership Architects in Denver, Colorado.
In addition to being a cultural and social destination for the community and students at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs, the performing arts center also functions as a transportation hub for the rest of the campus. One of the challenges of the project, given the large building footprint, was orienting the building effectively on the sloping site. Other responsibilities of the design included shaping the land to create mounds, berms, and pockets to feature outdoor sculptures along a winding ‘art walk’. Additionally, stormwater within the parking lots is designed to flow to bioswales and rain gardens to filter pollutants while providing natural irrigation to the trees, shrubs, and other plantings. This storm feature continues into the main entry plaza where a native plant palette designed in large swaths reinforces the building’s flowing form.
Pioneers Medical Center
Keen Land Design owner, Austin McKeen, worked on this project while employed at Davis Partnership Architects in Denver, Colorado.
Pioneers Medical Center is a critical access hospital located in Meeker, Colorado. The 87,000 square foot building was thoughtfully located on its 18-acre site to minimize costs related to grading, roadway, and utility infrastructure while maximizing surrounding views. Several site features were incorporated into the design including a healing garden for long-term care residents, dining patios, and walking trails. The design also features earthwork berming for wind mitigation and visual screening, rain gardens for stormwater management, and native, drought-tolerant planting. Mr. McKeen's other responsibilities included design of the parking areas, vehicular dropoff areas, service bay, and helipad to accommodate emergency medical transport.
Embassy Suites Hotel
Keen Land Design owner Austin McKeen worked on this project while employed at Altamont Environmental Engineering in Asheville, North Carolina.
Embassy Suites is an 8-storey, 185-room hotel under construction in downtown Asheville, NC. In addition to the hotel, the 2-acre site will feature a 200-car parking garage, passenger drop off area, plazas, pedestrian walkways, bicycle amenities, underground stormwater detention, and attractive landscaping.
